“Happy are those who reject the advice of evil people, who do not follow the example of sinners or join those who have no use for God. Instead, they find joy in obeying the Law of the Lord, and they study it day and night. They are like trees that grow beside a stream, that bear fruit at the right time, and whose leaves do not dry up. They succeed in everything they do.” — Psalm 1:1-3 GNT
The first Psalm brings me peace and contentment as I reflect on its teaching.
In God there is joy and strength. The other option doesn’t end well.
This week has been the time of plants for Becky and me. Plants from the greenhouse to provide us food. Out in the Crown Lands, a wave of wild flowers that bring us joy.
It would be ridiculous to expect tomatoes from the rhubarb plant growing in our garden. But have you noticed that at times we make life choices and then are surprised at the outcomes? Psalm 1 is about that.
Perhaps you’ve noticed that people who choose to spend time with God and with people who follow God seem to have a quality of inner peace and contentment about them more often than not.
Its rather like planting a garden. If you want to grow carrots, it would be a good idea to plant carrots. So it is with life. If you want peace, it is best to spend time with God. He’s the designer, the creator of peace. I’ve observed that the godly woman, the godly man are mostly peaceful folks. People who bring contentment with them. Have you seen that, too?
I pray that you and I will spend time around God. That we’ll find people who are like God.
Wouldn’t it be great if people could whisper about us ‘he reminds me of God?’ ‘She reminds me of God?’
Every day we can get a little closer to God, to experience the contentment that He brings. Shall we try it?
